Upgrading to larger radiators

Upgrading to larger radiators normally is generally doable and often isn’t too difficult. However, before doing so, you need to consider pipework, optimal radiator size and fitting.

If your pipework isn’t suitable for the larger radiator, you might need to have this altered first by a professional. A larger radiator is likely to make a significant difference to heating efficiency and output. Large radiators are suitable for use with a heat pump thanks to the lower flow temperatures at which they can operate at. Equally, if you’ve got a condensing boiler, it should be more efficient.

Upgrading to smaller radiators

You might have worked out that the optimal sized radiator for a certain room is actually a smaller radiator than what already exists. In this case, a professional job would be required to efficiently perform the upgrade, without risk of damage:

  • Isolate and drain radiator - Turn off the central heating, allowing the radiators to cool down. Then close the valves at each end of the radiator
  • Remove old radiator - Your existing radiator will need to be disconnected from the piping and unscrewed/removed from wall brackets, before they themselves can be removed from the wall.
  • Install new radiator - Next, new wall brackets need to be connected, perfectly positioned to align the bottom valves on the new smaller radiator with the existing pipework. Once connected, valves can be reopened.
  • Test central heating - Finally, turn the central heating back on, testing that the radiator is working properly and there are no leaks in the system.

Upgrading to designer radiators

Designer radiators come in a variety of styles, colours and sizes, and act as a more aesthetically pleasing form of heating your home.

They usually consist of styles such as:

  • Vertical radiators
  • Tubed radiators
  • Column radiators
  • Heated towel rails
  • Flat front panel radiators
  • Double panel radiators

And they’re usually very efficient thanks to their use of high quality steel or aluminium.

Whilst designer radiators don’t always offer quite as much heat output as standard top-of-the-range radiators, installing them in the right location (likely the coldest part of a room) means they should be effective enough to heat most areas.

Installing designer radiators can increase your home’s value, both in terms of your own personal aesthetic and the price of your house. If you’re looking to replace your old radiators with new, designer radiators, it’s important you get the right help.

Lacey Plumbing & Heating can advise on the perfect radiator, as well as fitting them in the perfect position to warm your home.

What to consider when upgrading radiators

When upgrading your radiator(s), you need to consider:

  • Room size - Measure the dimensions of the room and determine what you need. Does the radiator need to be much bigger to match the area you’re heating, or does it just need to be slightly better quality?
  • Current/new radiator type - Consider the efficiency of the current radiator you have compared with that of the new one. For example, if you’re going from a regular radiator to a designer one, you might need to consider the decreased effectiveness of this.
  • Radiator material - Steel, aluminium and cast iron are all common materials for radiators. Consider each one based on their pros and cons, including weight, heat output and longevity.
  • Compatibility - Don’t just order a new radiator without double checking that the new radiators’ pipework matches your existing system. If it doesn’t you may have to pay for expensive alterations.

If you’re still unsure about upgrading your radiator, speak to the professionals.
