Is a broken down boiler an emergency?

If you experience a full boiler breakdown which results in no hot water or heating, this is certainly considered an emergency.

This is especially the case if:

  • You have elderly or vulnerable household occupants
  • You have young children
  • There is a gas leak or;
  • It’s winter.

In general, if your boiler breakdown is a concern for health and safety, then it should be regarded as an emergency.

How much will an emergency boiler repair cost?

It’s hard to put a complete figure on boiler repairs as they depend heavily on the extent of the issue. For example, a small replacement part will cost far less than a replacement pump or fan.

Depending on the age, make and complexity of the boiler, costs may be higher due to the fact they will require specific parts which can be hard to get.

We attend your boiler breakdown on a diagnosis charge and then provide you with a fixed price cost for repairing your boiler. This will be provided for in writing so you can decide whether or not to go ahead with the work.

Our team will always endeavour to provide you with the best advice and most cost effective solution for repairing your boiler.

How long will it take to repair my boiler?

Again, depending what type of boiler you have and the extent of the damage, repair times can vary.

If it is a relatively small issue, and the parts are readily available,  this can be fixed the same day. However, if the issue is larger and does require specific parts, it can take a couple of days as we need to ensure your boiler part is in stock.

We’ll aim to repair your boiler emergency asap, ensuring that your home is safe and you aren’t without a working boiler for long. Our team will give you a timescale for repair and will keep you fully informed on your repair appointment.

Common boiler problems and emergency fixes

There are a few common boiler breakdown issues which will require an emergency boiler repair:

  • You can smell gas. Gas leaking from your boiler is an emergency, and should be treated as such.

If you can smell gas you should open windows, evacuate your home and contact the National Gas Emergency Service Number on 0800 111 999. This service is free and they will attend within 2 hours.

You may require an attendance by one of our Gas Safe engineers if a gas leak is found to be in your property. Our Gas Safe engineers can attend and repair the leak and get you back up and running.

Some of the symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness and breathlessness. If anyone is displaying these symptoms, you should call 999.

  • No heating or hot water. If you aren’t getting heating or hot water, it should be considered an emergency. Some common issues which cause this include:
  1. Circulation issues caused by a failed part on your central heating system.
  2. A broken part on your boiler which stops the delivery of hot water.
  3. Low boiler pressure.
  4. Thermostat issues preventing the boiler from firing into action. You should always check your time control batteries before you call out a heating engineer.
  • Leaking and/or dripping caused by a broken seal or pressure valve, corrosion of pipes or even potentially incorrect installation. Even if you think the dripping isn’t serious, it shouldn’t be ignored as it could get worse.

If you’ve spotted a leak, turn off the water supply and contact us as soon as possible.

  • The boiler keeps turning off. If your boiler keeps turning off you will need a visit from a heating engineer to diagnose the reason for this.

This may only warrant a standard boiler repair, so you can contact us to book in for one as soon as.

No matter what the issue is, we’re here to help you. Whether it is a boiler issue, or even a plumbing concern, Lacey Plumbing and Heating are here to help.
